Groth Vineyards & Winery – Groth Winery is medium sized winery located in the heart of the famed Oakville district. It was founded in 1982 by Dennis Groth, a former Atari executive, and his wife, Judy. Nearby neighbors in this high real estate part of Napa Valley include Silver Oak, Screaming Eagle, PlumpJack, and Saddleback Cellars. The original vineyard, a 121-acre parcel was purchased in 1981 by Dennis & Judy Groth. In 1982, they added a second vineyard of 44 acres located south of Yountville, CA. These vineyards, which total 165 acres on the valley floor of Napa, are the primary source of grapes for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines produced by Groth Vineyards & Winery. Since 1996 Groth has replanted 90% of the vineyards. This major undertaking allows them to take advantage of the strides that have been reached in the viticulture community over the last decade, and combine them with their history with the land,
Their claim to fame is they were the first American Winery awarded 100 points by Robert Parker for their 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Groth maintains an insectary which is located to the side of the actual winery. Over 40 different species of plants were selectively chosen based on each plant’s ability to attract beneficial insects which then act as natural predators to the harmful insects within the actual vineyards. This garden includes a number of small trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. Groth has long practiced sustainable farming and this is just one more example of their commitment to this type of beneficial agriculture.
Dennis, a former CPA, and partner with Arthur Young & CO (now Ernst & Young) in 1978 was CFO of Atari, a games and electronics subsidiary of Time Warner. During the years 1978 to 1984, Dennis also served as Executive Vice President, President of the consumer products division, and finally, President of the international division at Atari.
